Common terms and definitions in the refractory industry

CCS (Cold Crushing Strength)

Maximum compressive load a refractory can withstand at room temperature, measured in MPa or kg/cm².

RUL (Refractoriness Under Load)

Temperature at which a refractory begins to deform under a constant load, indicating high-temp structural integrity.

Apparent Porosity

Percentage of open pores in a refractory. Lower porosity generally means better slag/metal penetration resistance.

Thermal Conductivity

Rate of heat transfer through a material. Low values indicate good insulation; high values aid heat transfer.

PCE (Pyrometric Cone Equivalent)

Standardized measure of refractoriness - the temperature at which a cone of the material deforms similarly to a standard cone.

Spalling

Breaking or flaking of refractory surfaces due to thermal stress, usually from rapid temperature changes.
